Many holidaymakers could be looking to book winter breaks this year as they missed out on their summer holidays due to the recession. One of the age old popular winter destinations has to be the Canary Islands . The islands lie just off the African coast, are of volcanic origin and are a Spanish territory. Its east Atlantic location ensures the summers are hot and the winters are mild and inviting.
Playa del Ingles on Gran Canaria and Playa de las Americas on Tenerife are favourites with the younger generation and help to ensure that these two islands are the most popular in the Canaries.
Lanzarote is the next favourite and has beautiful golden or white sands; Papagayo beach on its southern tip is probably the most beautiful and benefits from some of the best weather. It rarely ever rains on Lanzarote making it a popular choice for holidaymakers booking cheap holidays to the Canary Islands during the winter months.
Fuerteventura picks up the trade winds and warm Sahara breeze making it extremely popular with water sports enthusiasts, in particular wind surfers. You'll also find some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe here and some of the most amazing sand dunes.
La Gomera is one of the smaller less well known of the islands and is often only visited by day trippers on boat excursions from Tenerife . The vegetation is lush and green on this island making it very pretty and picturesque. It is especially favoured by keen walkers who enjoy the tranquillity, stunning scenery and warm hospitality.
The fifth largest Canary Island is La Palma , and it is also the most north westerly island. It is again predominately a walking destination and is a mass of blue, green and black. The dazzling blue sea brightens the contrasting dark volcanic sands and the colourful flora and fauna set off the dark green forests to perfection.
Finally, the most south westerly island is El Hierro, well off the beaten track and visited by only a handful of walkers every year.
Cheap holidays to the Canary Islands will remain ever popular with the great British tourist, no matter how many new destinations try to tempt them away.
